MARY POPPINS
Though probably most famous for TV's The Dick Van Dyke Show,
this legendary comic also made some great movies, beginning his film career with
musical comedies such as those with which he had begun his Broadway
career, and later making forays into serious drama. |
Dick Van Dyke began his movie career by reprising his Broadway
role of Albert Peterson in
Columbia's film adaptation of the stage musical BYE BYE BIRDIE (1963).
Co-starring Janet Leigh and
Ann-Margret, the film was significantly altered from its stage roots, to Van
Dyke's dismay, but the result is still entertaining although lacking much of the
play's satirical edge.

In what was to become his most famous film, Van Dyke played Bert
the Chimney Sweep in Walt Disney's
classic family film MARY POPPINS
(1964), starring Julie
Andrews (having a Jolly Holiday with Van Dyke at left), as well as David
Tomlinson, Glynis Johns, Elsa Lanchester, Reginald Owen, Arthur Treacher, Ed
Wynn and Jane Darwell. The film won five Academy Awards, including one for
Best Song, "Chim Chim Cher-ee," sung by Van Dyke.

takes on a life of it's own. At left is at still of Van Dyke with Heather
