THE PHILADELPHIA STORY
Among Cary's most successful non-comedies
were his four films with Master of Suspense
Alfred Hitchcock. After working together on SUSPICION (1941), Hitch
called on Cary again in 1946 for NOTORIOUS, his South American spy
thriller co-starring
Ingrid Bergman (at left) and
Claude Rains. |

United States under public law 271 of the congress." --as Capt. Henri Rochard
in I WAS A MALE WAR BRIDE (1949).
- "My dear mother-in-law, I have not lost my temper with you
for seven years. Don't trifle with your luck." --as Barnaby Fulton
in MONKEY BUSINESS (1952).
- "You're only old when you forget you're young." --as Barnaby
Fulton in MONKEY BUSINESS (1952).
- "I never know in advance when I'm going to be a genius."
--as Barnaby Fulton in MONKEY BUSINESS (1952).
- "School's open again. Professor Robie will now conduct a lesson
on bad manners and how to get a spanking fast." --as John Robie in
TO CATCH A THIEF (1955).
- "You're a jackpot of admirable character traits." --as

Back to comedy, Cary finds his
irrepressible charm problematic when it wins him an underage admirer (Shirley
Temple) with a judge for an older sister (Myrna Loy)
in THE BACHELOR AND THE BOBBY-SOXER (1947). |
The following year, Cary and
Loy personified the materialistic ambitions of post-war middle-class
Americans in MR. BLANDINGS BUILDS HIS DREAM HOUSE (1948), also featuring Melvyn
Douglas. |
Returning briefly to screwball comedy of the gender-bending
variety, Cary was paired with Ann Sheridan
in I WAS A MALE WAR BRIDE (1949), the fourth of Cary's five comedies directed by
Howard Hawks. |
