Heston as John the Baptist in
George Stevens' THE
GREATEST STORY EVER TOLD (1965), a star-studded epic retelling of the life
of Christ.
Amazingly prescient and relevant today in its portrayal of violent
conflict between adherents of the Islamic and Christian faiths, KHARTOUM (1966)
is based on the true story of a historic
British defeat at the hands of 19th century Sudanese Muslims. Heston
plays Gen. Charles George Gordon, the headstrong British general who was
appointed military governor of Khartoum but disobeyed orders to evacuate
to Egypt, leading to an epic battle against a Muslim army led by Mohammed
Ahmed el Mahdi (played by
Laurence Olivier).
One of Heston's most popular movies of the 1960s was PLANET OF
THE APES (1968), a science fiction drama about two astronauts who crash
land their spaceship on a planet ruled by apes. Co-starring
Kim Hunter
and Roddy McDowall, APES spawned five
sequels in the 1970s, but Heston only appeared in the first, BENEATH THE
PLANET OF THE APES (1970).
