Hollywood: The Gossipel Truth: 'Show Boat'

by Sidney Skolsky

The Washington Post, April 28, 1936 page 11

Universal previewed "Show Boat" on Saturday night, and like the stage play, it is now one of the screen's greatest musicals It was grand seeing "Show Boat" again, it had all the warmth of meeting an old friend Helen Morgan proves definitely that she should be in pictures and Paul Robeson's rendition of "Old Man River" is the greatest singing ever heard on the screen. I spoke to Oscar Hammerstein and Jerome Kern, who did both the stage and screen plays, after the preview Said Hammerstein: "I'm more that satisfied. I like it in the movies more than I did on the stage."
