Shirley as Barbara Barry, a little girl who gets lost one
day and is picked up by entertainers who make her part of their comedy
act, in POOR LITTLE RICH GIRL (1936). This musical comedy also featured
Alice Faye, Gloria Stuart and Jane Darwell.
A poster from the film from which she derived her most popular nickname, DIMPLES
(1936) with Frank Morgan. Although he doesn't appear in the film, Bill
Bojangles Robinson provided the choreography for the musical numbers.
In
CAPTAIN JANUARY (1936), Shirley plays Star, an orphan rescued from the sea and
raised by an old lighthouse attendant (Guy Kibbee). Also featuring Slim
Summerville and Jane Darwell (one of
Shirley's most frequent co-stars during her
Fox years -- appearing in six of her films), the highlight of this
nautically-themed musical is Shirley's dance with a lanky sailor named Paul
(Buddy Ebsen) to "The Codfish Ball."
Completely unrelated to Kate Douglas Wiggin's famous story of
the same name, in REBECCA OF SUNNYBROOK FARM (1938), Randolph
Scott tries to make Shirley a radio star.
