THE SOUND OF MUSIC
A lavish, oversized musical set in the Roaring Twenties that
featured Julie and Mary Tyler Moore (show above dancing in an elevator)
as well as Carol Channing, THOROUGHLY MODERN MILLIE (1967) was not a commercial
success (earning back only $8.5 million of its $20 million cost), but it did capture Julie in the flapper costumes that had brought
her Broadway stardom (in The Boyfriend) and it received seven Oscar
nominations, winning one for Elmer
Bernstein's musical score.

Another commercial disappointment but still a fun movie,
DARLING LILI (1970) is a farcical romantic comedy starring Julie as a World
War I German spy and Rock Hudson
(right)
as the flight squadron commander she's spying on. The film marked Andrews' first
with director
Blake Edwards whom she later
married.
DARLING LILI wasn't
overly-well received (perhaps because it was a break from Julie's wholesome
image) but its music did receive Oscar nominations, including one for Henry
Mancini and Johnny Mercer's song "Whistling Away the Dark."

Julie's film career came roaring back in 1982 with her Oscar-nominated
performance as a woman pretending to be a man pretending to be a woman
in VICTOR/VICTORIA. Written, produced and directed by Blake
Edwards with Academy Award winning music by Mancini
and Leslie Bricusse, the film received a total of seven nominations.
